Trash & Bulk Collection
The City of Newark collects approximately 1,300 tons of trash and bulk items every week. Our mission is to maintain the City’s health, safety, and cleanliness through routine, organized, and timely curbside collections and vacant lot patrols. We provide the necessary services to prevent soil, water, and air contamination, reduce risk of illness, and prevent rodents and other pests. We are accountable to Newark’s residents, businesses, and visitors, and we aim to do so by keeping Newark clean.
Household Trash Collection
Household trash is collected twice a week in each zone on the following schedule:
- Zone A: Mondays and Thursdays
- Zone B: Tuesdays and Fridays
Trash Rules
- Trash MUST be contained in a trash receptacle/bin with an attached, tight-fitting lid. Trash bags placed on the curb will NOT be collected.
- Set your trash receptacle on the curb between 6 PM to 10 PM the night before your collection day.
Yard Waste Collection
- Zone A: 3rd Wednesday of each month
- Zone B: 4th Wednesday of each month
- Leaves
- Small Twigs and Small Tree Branches
- Grass Clippings
Please package yard waste in a brown paper bag and/or tie your twigs in a bundle, and set on the curb the night before your assigned collection day.
White Goods and Appliances
- Disposal of appliances and white goods are collected by the City of Newark by appointment only. The following items are accepted for pickup:
- Refrigerators
- Stoves
- Washing Machines and Dryers
- Air Conditioners

Bulk Pickup
- Bulky waste, or bulk items, are household items that include the following:
- Couches, Tables and Chairs
- Mattresses (click HERE for mattress disposal rules)
- Dressers, Closets, and Vanities
- Rugs
Bulk waste curbside collection occurs twice a month, once in each zone. The schedule is as follows:
- Zone A: 1st Wednesday of each month
- Zone B: 2nd Wednesday of each month
Every residence is limited to ten (10) bulk items that can be placed outside on the scheduled bulk collection day.
Anything exceeding ten (10) bulk items shall be removed by a private hauler on the same day at the owner’s expense.
Any person, firm, corporation, or entity that violates, fails or neglects to comply with the provisions of this Subsection, or rule or regulation promulgated pursuant thereto, shall be punishable upon conviction thereof by a fine or penalty.
Bulk Items NOT Accepted by the City of Newark

- Roofing tiles/shingles
- Glass
- Windows
- Automotive parts
- Engines
- Transmission
- Bumpers
- Tires
For these items, the City recommends residents call a private hauler for proper disposal.
Electronic Waste
Electronics (computers, TV, etc.), also known as e-waste, can be dropped off for recycling at the Newark DPW Headquarters located at 62 Frelinghuysen Ave in Newark. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM and Saturdays from 8 AM to 12:30 PM.
