Trash & Bulk Collection
The City of Newark collects 1,369 tons of trash and bulk items every week. Our mission is to maintain the City’s health, safety, and cleanliness through routine, organized, and timely curbside collections and vacant lot patrols. We provide the necessary services to prevent soil, water, and air contamination, reduce risk of illness, and prevent rodents and other pests. We are accountable to Newark’s residents, businesses, and visitors, and we aim to do so by keeping Newark clean.
What We Pickup
- Household Trash
- Garbage bags are no longer suitable receptacles for placing garbage at the curb.
The Law says use a garbage can with an attached tight-fitting lid, then place your garbage bag in the can.
Yard Waste Collection
- Includes leaves and small twigs tied in a bundle
- Please put yard waste in a brown bag or tied in a bundle
- Zone A: 3rd Wednesday of Each Month
- Zone B: 4th Wednesday of Each Month
Appliance and White Goods
- Refrigerator, air conditioners, and other large appliances

Bulk Pickup
Bulky household waste or bulk items are household items that include couches, tables, chairs, COVERED Mattresses(up to 3 mattress can be picked up), dressers, closets, rugs, exercise equipment and vanities.
Every residential privately owned property shall be limited to ten (10) bulk items that can be placed outside on the scheduled bulk collection day.
Anything exceeding ten (10) bulk items shall be removed by a private hauler, on the same day, at the owner’s expense.
Any person, firm, corporation, or entity that violates, fails or neglects to comply with the provisions of this Subsection, or rule or regulation promulgated pursuant thereto, shall be punishable upon conviction thereof by a fine or penalty.

Electronics
Electronics (computers, TV, ect.) can be dropped off at Essex Country Electronic Recycling Depot located at 62 Frelinghuysen Ave in Newark. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm and Saturdays 8am to 12:30pm. For more information please call 973-733-3644
Lead acid batteries (household and car) should be dropped off at 62 Frelinghuysen ave. in Newark Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3pm
