Recycling
The mission of the Recycling division is to provide routine curbside recycling collection for Newark residents and businesses to reduce landfill waste, prevent pollution, and protect the environment. Recycling is a sustainable waste management practice that keeps our City clean.
Recycling is mandated by City ordinance §15:12-4, which requires the separation of recyclable materials from municipal solid waste.
NEW Recycling Schedule IN EFFECT
Beginning January 27, 2025, recycling collections will take place during the night shift between 6 PM and 2 AM the night of your collection day.
Recycling will be collected twice a week from each zone on the following schedule:
Zone A
Monday: Paper and Cardboard, 6 PM to 2 AM (into Tuesday morning)
Thursday: Plastic and Glass Bottles, Cans, and Containers, 6 PM to 2 AM (into Friday morning)
Zone B
Tuesday: Paper and Cardboard, 6 PM to 2 AM (into Wednesday morning)
Friday: Plastic and Glass Bottles, Cans, and Containers, 6 PM to 2 AM (into Saturday morning)




Recycling Rules
Please abide by the following rules when recycling:
- Do NOT place your recyclables in a plastic bag. Doing so is against City ordinance §15:12-7. Instead, place your recyclables loose in your bin and set on the curb.
- Flatten all cardboard and tie them together before placing on the curb.
- Make sure bottles, cans, and containers are thoroughly cleaned and dried before disposal.
- The following items are NOT accepted as recyclables in the City of Newark:
- Plastic Grocery Bags
- Paper Towels and Napkins
- Ink Cartridges
- Residents who violate any rules above risk being fined and/or not getting their recycling collected.
Recycling Bin Pickup For Homeowners
Newark homeowners can pick up a FREE recycling bin at the Newark DPW Headquarters at 62 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark NJ 07114 (available while supplies last). Headquarters are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
To receive a bin, residents must present a valid photo ID along with proof of residency, such as a water bill.
