Peak Season for Yard Waste is Here: Newark Public Works Encourages Proper Disposal of Yard Waste

As the fall season kicks off, Newark residents are reminded to properly dispose of yard waste.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) performs curbside collections of yard waste twice a month on the following schedule:

  • Zone A: Every 3rd Wednesday of each month
  • Zone B: Every 4th Wednesday of each month

If you are unsure of your collection zone, hit the ‘Locate My Zone’ button on the bottom of the Newark DPW webpage on dpw.newarknj.gov.

Yard waste includes tree leaves, small twigs and tree branches, and grass trimmings. Newark DPW does NOT collect large tree branches, soil, fertilizer, rocks, bricks, food waste, or animal waste.

Yard waste must be properly packaged for curbside pick up. Residents are advised NOT to sweep or blow their leaves into the street. Doing so may result in fines ranging from $100 to $1000.

Instead, tie your twigs into a bundle and place your leaves in a biodegradable paper bag.

In addition to curbside collections, residents are strongly encouraged to visit their nearest service center for yard waste drop off, as well as drop off for garbage, recycling, bulk items, and mattresses. Service centers are open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM – 3:30 PM.

DPW is stationed at the following locations:

  1. 61 Verona Avenue (North Ward)
  2. 99 Earl Street (South Ward)
  3. 244 South 12th Street (West Ward)
  4. 29 Waydell Street (East Ward)

*Location in the Central Ward is coming soon.
