Keep your block leaf-free this fall season with Newark DPW’s Annual Leaf Recycling Program!

The City of Newark Department of Public Works will begin curbside collection of leaves on Wednesday, October 15. Leaf collection will continue through the end of the year.

Leaf pick-ups will be made as part of DPW’s regularly scheduled yard waste collection.

Yard Waste and Leaf Pickup Schedule

  • Zone A: Every third Wednesday of the month

  • Zone B: Every fourth Wednesday of the month

  • No yard waste collections on fifth Wednesdays

Residents should place their leaves in biodegradable, paper bags and place them on the curb the night before between the hours of 7 P.M. and 10 P.M.

Yard Waste Disposal Tips

  1. Whenever possible, store leaves in a backyard compost bin. This method is preferred to reduce waste at the source.
  2. Leaves MUST be placed in a bio-degradable paper bag. DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS. Doing so will result in your yard waste not being collected and possible fines.
  3. Leaf bags must NOT contain large branches. Large branches should be separated and tied up in a bundle. Leaf bags can contain grass clippings and other yard trimmings.
  4. Do NOT rake or blow leaves into the streetFailure to comply may result in fines ranging from $100 to a maximum of $1,000.
  5. If a city resident is using a contracted landscaper for lawn maintenance, the landscaper is responsible for disposing of the leaves.
  6. Newark residents are encouraged to drop off yard waste at official DPW service centers at the following Newark locations:
    1. 61 Verona Avenue (North Ward)
    2. 244 South 12th Street (West Ward)
    3. 99 Earl Street (South Ward)
    4. 29 Waydell Street (East Ward)

What we DO and DO NOT Collect

Yard waste includes:

  1. Tree leaves
  2. Small twigs and branches
  3. *Large Branches (MUST be separated and tied in a bundle)
  4. Grass Trimmings 

Newark DPW does NOT collect:

  1. Soil or fertilizer
  2. Rocks or bricks
  3. Food Waste
  4. Animal Waste
