Keep your block leaf-free this fall season with Newark DPW’s 2026-2027 Leaf Recycling Program!

The City of Newark Department of Public Works will begin curbside collection of leaves on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Leaf collection will continue through Wednesday, January 29, 2027.

Leaves and yard waste will be collected in all wards every weekday, Monday through Friday. Residents should place their leaves in biodegradable, paper bags and place them on the curb the night before between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

*This year, Newark will NOT be collecting by zone, as done in previous years.

Newark residents are encouraged to drop off yard waste at official DPW service centers at the following Newark locations:

  1. 61 Verona Avenue (North Ward)
  2. 244 South 12th Street (West Ward)
  3. 99 Earl Street (South Ward)
  4. 29 Waydell Street (East Ward)

Yard Waste Disposal Tips

  1. Whenever possible, store leaves in a backyard compost bin. This method is preferred to reduce waste at the source.
  2. Leaves MUST be placed in a bio-degradable paper bag. DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS. Doing so will result in your yard waste not being collected and possible fines.
  3. Leaf bags must NOT contain large branches. Large branches should be separated and tied up in a bundle. Leaf bags can contain grass clippings and other yard trimmings.
  4. Do NOT rake or blow leaves into the street. Failure to comply may result in fines ranging from $100 to a maximum of $1,000.
  5. If a city resident is using a contracted landscaper for lawn maintenance, the landscaper is responsible for disposing of the leaves.

Brown paper bags can be obtained for Newark residents 62 years or older by showing their identification card at the following locations, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
  • Department of Public Works Headquarters, 62 Frelinghuysen Avenue
  • North Ward Service Center, 61 Verona Avenue
  • West/Central Ward Service Center, 244 South 12th Street
  • South Ward Service Center, 99 Earl Street
